Singer Ronnie james dio joined SABBATH BLACK in 1979, resulting in two consecutive classic albums: “Heaven and hell” and “Crowd rules”. Rhinoceros salutes the long shadow cast by this ephemeral program with newly remastered versions of the two albums enriched with rare and unpublished music. “Heaven And Hell: Deluxe Edition” and “Mob Rules: Deluxe Edition” will be released separately on March 5. Each album will be available as 2 CDs ($ 19.98) or 2 LP ($ 31.98). Due to space constraints, both vinyl editions include a selection of bonus material from CDs. The music will also be available via digital download and streaming services on the same day. A rare live version of “Heaven and hell” and a new live version of “The rules of the crowd” are both available today as digital singles and can be streamed below.
It gave joined BLACK SABBATH for the first time in 1979 and quickly found related minds in the guitarist Tony Iommi, bass player Geezer Butlerand drummer Bill ward. When “Heaven and hell” was released in April 1980, the album met with effusive reviews for the band’s return to form on metal masterpieces like “Neon Knights” and the title track. The album reached 9th place in the UK and 28th in the US, where it is also certified platinum.
“Heaven And Hell: Deluxe Edition” adds several bonus tracks that have never been released in North America, including versions of “Children of the sea” and “Die young” recorded live in 1980 in Hartford, Connecticut. The set ends with live rarities like “E5150” and “Neon Knights” which originally appeared in 2007 on the Handmade rhinolimited edition collection of “Black Sabbath: Live At Hammersmith Odeon”.
To be continued “Heaven and hell”, the band returned to the studio in 1981 to begin recording “Crowd rules”, with mixer Vinny Appice joining the group for the first time. Released in October 1981 and certified gold, the album was another SABBATH classic, including stars like “The sign of the cross from the south”, “Ride the night” and the title track.
“Mob Rules: Deluxe Edition” has a wide selection of rare and unreleased recordings. With additional tracks of “Live at Hammersmith Odeon”, the collection also includes a new mixed version of “The rules of the crowd”. The icing on the cake is an entire concert recorded in 1982 in Portland, Oregon. Highlights include stellar performances of “Neon Knights”, “Heaven and hell” and “Voodoo”.
