The Ellen DeGeneres Show marked a late end to its annual “12 Days of the Giveaway” on Jan.12, when host DeGeneres first returned after testing positive for COVID-19 in December. DeGeneres’ positive test derailed the show’s year-end schedule, after she completed just 11 days of giveaways. And because “11 Days of Giveaways” just doesn’t have the same ringtone, it brought back the same audience that would have been there in December for its first show (all over again, though). “Obviously, a lot of negative things are going on, so I’m going to talk about something positive instead: my COVID test,” she opened her monologue. DeGeneres went on to explain that she learned about her test in her studio, before filming. “I was in the hair and makeup, powdered my face and put on my extensions,” she joked. “And then my assistant Craig walks in and said, ‘You tested positive for COVID,’ then everyone around me ran away. It’s funny, people are really scared and they ran. Some have not returned since.
DeGeneres also opened up about her symptoms, namely the back pain she had previously discussed in a video she tweeted. “The doctor put me on painkillers and muscle relaxers – jackpot, finally this thing is paying off,” she said, describing the pain. “Do you know how I make you laugh so hard that your ribs hurt?” It was like that for me. Now I know how you feel when I make you laugh. Back pain, she added, was “the only symptom” she was experiencing. (COVID-19 is believed to cause muscle pain, which can include back pain, according to Prevention.) “I didn’t have a headache; I didn’t have a fever; I haven’t lost my sense of taste, ”continued DeGeneres. “Although I wore Crocs with socks for a day, then it’s up to you.” She concluded her monologue by telling her audience that she didn’t know where she caught the virus (“I only lick three or four doorknobs”) and that her “heart goes out” to all who do. facing COVID-19. “I hope this show gives you joy, brightens your day,” DeGeneres said.
