Kate Middleton reportedly received a special surprise from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry for her 39th birthday.

The Duchess of Cambridge, whose birthday was January 9, was “taken aback” when she saw the unexpected gifts and card from her brother-in-law, 36, and his wife, 39.

“It was a nice surprise,” a source told Us Weekly on Wednesday. “Kate wasn’t expecting anything from the couple.”

According to the royal insider, Middleton had a “low-key” celebration with her husband, Prince William, 38, along with their three children: Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2 years.

According to the media outlet, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s surprise came shortly after it was announced that the couple, who currently reside in California, are due to return to the UK later this year to participate at several royal events. Queen Elizabeth II, William and Harry’s grandmother, turns 95 in April. Her husband, Prince Philip, turns 100 in June.

Additionally, William and Harry are expected to appear for the unveiling of the statue of their late mother, Princess Diana, at Kensington Palace. The Princess of Wales would have turned 60 in July.

Last summer, royal journalists Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie published their bombshell ‘Finding Freedom’, where many palace insiders came forward and detailed what drove the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to leave as senior members of the British Royal Family.

The Sunday Times reported that Middleton would not immediately have rolled out the former American actress’ red carpet when she started dating Harry.

“While it isn’t necessarily her responsibility, Kate hasn’t done much to bridge the gap,” Scobie and Durand wrote.

The authors insisted that while the Duchesses “weren’t at war with each other” there had been “hard times”.

According to the book, Middleton felt that she and the “Suits” star did not have much in common “other than the fact that they lived in Kensington Palace.”

Vanity Fair royal correspondent Katie Nicholl pointed out that friends of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spoke to the Mail on Sunday, insisting the couple had ‘done everything they could’ to welcome Markle in the royal family. They claimed Middleton personally prepared vegan meals for Markle during a visit to their home in Anmer Hall.

Yet, wrote Scobie and Durand, women “have struggled to overcome distant politeness.”

Markle initially hoped Middleton would “show him the ropes” by being a member of “The Firm”. But the book claimed that Middleton, who was pregnant during Prince Louis’ time, was distant from her.

“[Kate] was fiercely loyal to her husband and family, ”they stressed.

Vanity Fair reported on Monday that at one point Middleton brought flowers to Markle as an offer of peace. However, Meghan “told Kate in no uncertain terms that flowers were not enough.”

Scobie and Durand shared that Harry, in particular, was “deeply saddened” by the growing distance between him and his older brother William and Middleton. He had hoped their children would grow up together.

Although it was initially reported that Harry and Markle had cooperated with the authors, representatives for the couple confirmed to Fox News that they had no role in the book.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not questioned and did not help ‘find freedom’,” the statement said. “This book is based on the authors’ own experiences as members of the Royal Press and their own independent reporting.”
