Sony has announced the 59th addition to the E-Mount lens lineup, the 35mm f / 1.4 GM. Built “in the same spirit” as the 24mm f / 1.4 GM, Sony says this lens is capable of being a versatile lens, from portraits to landscapes.
With the 35mm f / 1.4 GM, Sony’s lineup now has 39 full-frame lenses and 20 E-mount APS-C lenses, 12 of which are G-Master rated.
Weighing 524 grams (~ 18.4 ounces) and relatively compact in design, the 35mm f / 1.4 GM promises corner-to-corner sharpness, excellent rendering of out of focus areas, fast and quiet autofocus, and resistance to dust and humidity.
Sony claims the lens was designed to be precise at any aperture, including wide open at f / 1.4, and says the focus plane is rendered perfectly with natural reflections in the foreground and in the background. The 35mm f / 1.4 uses two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements to contribute to overall picture quality and resolution as well as an ED (extra-low dispersion) element along with other optical refinements to effectively remove chromatic aberration and purple fringing for a crisp, natural picture – The search for images that Sony believes will contribute to a quick and easy post-shoot workflow.
Speaking of internals, the lens is made up of 14 elements divided into 10 groups and features an 11-blade diaphragm, a feature Sony claims is extremely rare in 35mm lenses and the 35mm f / 1.4 GM is considered the first or among the first. to offer it.
Although it’s not a macro lens, Sony says it’s useful for close-up applications. It has a close focus distance of around 10.5 inches (27cm) and a maximum magnification of 0.23x in autofocus.
