Jessica Campbell, best known for her roles in the 1999 film “Election” and the cult classic “Freaks and Geeks”, has died at age 38.
Campbell’s family announced that the actor died on December 29 in Portland, Oregon. Campbell retired from acting to become a naturopathic doctor, and collapsed after seeing patients in her office. She could not be resuscitated and her cause of death must be determined.
Campbell first appeared in the 1992 TV movie “In the Best Interests of the Children”, starring Sarah Jessica Parker. Her major role in the film was the 1999 comedy satire “Election”, starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon. She played the angry sister of school jock Paul (Chris Klein) whose girlfriend throws her away and leaves her for Paul. Wanting revenge, she runs against him for the class presidency. The performance earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Performance.
The actor has also appeared in “Freaks and Geeks,” as Amy Andrews, a tuba player in the McKinley High Marching Band. She briefly dates Ken (Seth Rogen) and later reveals to him that she was born intersex.
Campbell also starred in the drama “Safety of Objects” opposite Glenn Close and Dermot Mulroney, as well as “Junk” and “Dad’s Day” in 2002.
Cambell’s cousin Sarah Wessling has started a GoFundMe campaign to pay for funeral expenses and provide for Campbell’s 10-year-old son Oliver. “A true adventurer in every sense of the word, Jessica has packed an incredible amount of experiences into her tragically short life,” Wessling wrote on the GoFundMe page. “You could always count on her as the instigator, or at least as a willing accomplice, of various forms of mischief and evasions. To know her is to have an exaggerated history involving her. To know her is to have known a true friendship.
Witherspoon also expressed his condolences in a tweet: “So heartbroken to hear this. Working with Jessica on “Election” has been such a pleasure. I send all my love to Jessica’s family and loved ones.
