House Democrats call for investigation of ‘suspicious’ visits to Capitol Hill the day before riot

A coalition of more than 30 House Democrats is calling for an investigation into the “suspicious” tours of the Capitol that took place the day before last Wednesday’s deadly attack by a crowd of Trump supporters.

Lawmakers say they witnessed an “extremely high number of outside groups in the complex on January 5, which is unusual given that public tours of the Capitol ended in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic” .

They also write that some of the visitors the lawmakers met “appeared to be associated” with the “Stop the Steal” rally held at the White House the next day when Congress certified the president-elect. “The members of the group that attacked the Capitol appeared to have unusually detailed knowledge of the layout of the Capitol complex. The presence of these groups in the Capitol complex was indeed suspect, ”write the lawmakers.

“In view of the events of January 6, the links between these groups inside the Capitol complex and the attacks on the Capitol must be investigated,” they added.

The letter comes after Sherrill told a Facebook livestream on Tuesday that she saw coworkers directing people to “recognition lapsFrom the Capitol before the attack, which left five dead and the building damaged.

She said she intended “to see those members of Congress who cheered her on; members of Congress who had groups across Capitol Hill that I saw on January 5 – recognition for the next day; the members of Congress who incited this violent crowd; members of Congress who tried to help our President undermine our democracy; I will see that they are held accountable and, if necessary, make sure that they do not sit in Congress.

Sherrill isn’t the only one worried about security in the Capitol complex before the building is stormed.
