We had more questions than answers at the end of Mike Tomlin’s final 2020 season press conference.
One big question that arose was what the Steelers plan to do about quarterback Ben Roethlisberger whose current contract expires at the end of the 2021 season.
When WPXI sports reporter Alby Oxenreiter asked Tomlin if it was realistic to expect Roethlisberger to return given the implications of the salary cap, Tomlin said, “I think it’s reasonable to assume that he there’s a chance he’ll come back, certainly.
Roethlisberger’s return comes with a salary cap of $ 41 million, or 23% of the overall cap, according to OverTheCap.com. The contract will earn him $ 19 million – $ 4 million in base salary and a bonus of $ 15 million due on March 15. The remaining $ 22.25 million is a pro-rated bonus, which is dead money or money Pittsburgh will be responsible for, even if Ben is released or retires.
Tomlin claims he is unaware of the current Steelers salary cap situation. “I’m really at the information gathering stage,” he said.
Regardless of the Steelers’ decision, we’ll know by March 15 when that $ 15 million bonus is due.
