Pelosi said the House would pass new rules when it returns to session on Jan.21 to impose hefty fines for bypassing security: $ 5,000 for the first offense and $ 10,000 for the second. The fines will be deducted from the salaries of lawmakers.

“To ensure compliance with the Capitol Police Board regulations regarding firearms and incendiary devices, as well as to provide a safe and secure environment in which to conduct legislative business, with immediate effect, all persons, including members, are held [to] undergo a security check upon entering the Chamber, ”Acting Sergeant-at-Arms Timothy Blodgett wrote in a note to lawmakers and staff.
