HTC has very quietly unveiled the Desire 21 Pro 5G, a lower midrange device that offers super-fast networking but may not extend beyond Taiwan’s borders.
This device had leaked before launching with absolutely zero fanfare, but it was unclear exactly when HTC would share more details. Since the company has effectively left the high-end smartphone space, focusing on the lower end of the Android market is a wise business decision. However, it is a crowded and competitive space.
That said, the HTC Desire 21 Pro 5G appears to be a strong contender for those looking for an affordable 5G capable smartphone thanks to its internals. Measuring 6.7 inches, the Desire 21 Pro features a 90Hz FHD + LCD display and makes it the first HTC device to feature a higher refresh rate panel. There’s a hole-punch notch placed in the center, and we have to admit that the bezels are pretty thin for an affordable focusing device like this.
Inside, it uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. There’s room for a massive 5,000mAh battery that includes 18W support. The rear quad-camera setup relies on a 48-megapixel main sensor, includes an 8-megapixel ultra-wide, as well as the usual depth and macro sensors rated at 2 megapixels each.
Another notable hardware includes a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint reader for biometric security. But it doesn’t appear to include a 3.5mm headphone port – a staple on affordable Android devices.
One of the biggest frustrations will be the software. Like the HTC Desire 21 Pro 5G comes with Android 10 preinstalled. Given that Android 11 launched almost four months ago, we have to say that this is really not acceptable unless it is fixed quickly with a software update – which is what the company does. is not particularly good.
Unfortunately, it is not known if the HTC Desire 21 Pro 5G will be available outside of Taiwan. The price in the region is TWD $ 11,990, or around $ 430 when exchange rates are factored in. It’s now available for pre-orders in Star Blue and Fantasy Purple, but it won’t ship until January 21, 2021. It’s unclear if or when the Desire 21 Pro 5G will hit other global markets.
