Add two more names to recent calls for political unity: Country stars Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line are making their own song with their new song, “Undivided,” singing “I Think It’s Time To meet.” Despite what the timing may sound like, the song was not inspired by the recent riot on Capitol Hill and the subsequent impeachment trial of Donald Trump. Hubbard began writing “Undivided” while in quarantine on his tour bus in his driveway after testing positive for COVID-19, and the musicians announced the song the day before the riot, Jan.5 . Still, the parallels between his words and the right-wing attachment to the unit after the riot are a bit strange. “May the Good Lord bring us together / Until this country we love / Undivided”, sings the couple in the choir. McGraw calls out the political divide even more directly on the bridge, chanting, “I’m tired of looking left or right / So I’m just looking up.”
McGraw and Hubbard’s song comes after the riot also revealed some division in country music – starting with Hubbard’s own group. Brittney Kelley, wife of Hubbard Florida Georgia Line bandmate Brian Kelley, posted an Instagram post on January 6, apparently in support of the rioters on Capitol Hill. “God, please protect our country and the people who fight for our freedom every day,” she wrote. “Pray for peace and unity for all”. In another post, Kelley later clarified, “I don’t believe in violence, nor violence, nor riots / sects that riot or storming buildings” and “I don’t think ‘Patriots “Are the people who storm the building.” Yet, meanwhile, country star Jason Aldean’s wife Brittany was using her Instagram to share the disproved plot that the antifa led the riot rather than Trump supporters. (Instagram deleted the photo she reposted.) “I have AMAZING conversations with my liberal friends and we can agree to disagree,” Brittany Aldean later wrote on her Instagram Story on January 10. . “These are the people who don’t want to hear from you. this guy my ass. (For her part, Hubbard’s wife Hayley vocally supported President-elect Joe Biden on his social media. Publish, McGraw and his wife, Faith Hill, donated to the Biden campaign.)
Yet not all country musicians have been so quick to jump on the unity bandwagon. Maren Morris and Mickey Guyton had a Twitter exchange to denounce the riots soon after they happened, with Guyton writing, “I am completely disgusted. Are these boys still supporting blue? Ask a friend. “Morris replied“And how don’t the wives of some singers know the difference between walking for racial injustice and the Nazis who raped our Capitol because their guy didn’t win?” 🙄. »Guyton replied, “I know exactly who you’re talking about,” with a GIF from Megan Thee Stallion.
