New Jersey man arrested following TV interview on Capitol Hill riot day

EWING, New Jersey (WPVI) – A New Jersey man is now among dozens of people facing federal charges after last week’s siege on the U.S. Capitol.

Thomas Baranyi of Ewing was arrested on Tuesday, nearly a week after making international headlines for what he witnessed.

He admitted in a television interview that he was with a group of rioters who stormed the Capitol.

“The riot police came and started to drag us out with their sticks,” he said.

He told reporters he was actually next to his fellow rioter, Air Force veteran Ashli ​​Babbitt, when she was shot and killed by Capitol Police inside the building.

“We had barged into the rooms inside and there was a young woman rushing through the windows. A number of police and Secret Service were saying ‘come on down and get out of the way.’ She did not hear the call and as we rushed to grab people and bring them back they shot him in the neck, ”Baranyi said.

Federal authorities used the television interview as evidence in court. Baranyi was charged with disorderly conduct and violent entry into a restricted building. He was released on $ 100,000 bail.

As he left the chaotic scene on Wednesday, he told reporters he was not happy with the election results and described how he violated the Capitol.

“We tore up the scaffolding, threw flashbags and tear gas, and made our way through all the rooms. I was just trying to get into Congress or whoever we could get in and tell them we needed some sort of investigation on this, ”Baranyi said.

Baranyi is due in court on January 18. A judge restricted his trip to New Jersey, he must surrender his passport and cannot own a gun.

The bond for President Donald Trump’s known supporter has been set at $ 750,000. Now the Philadelphia District Attorney is seeking his bail revoked and arrest after he said he was part of the insurgency in Washington.

The prosecutor’s office said Joshua Macias violated his bail by participating in the riots in Washington. He will be in court Thursday in Philadelphia where the prosecutor will seek revocation of his bail.
