Hours after President Trump was impeached for the second time, his successor Joe Biden said after the vote that he hoped the Senate would be able to juggle its role in the process with its other pressing responsibilities.
“Today, in a bipartisan vote, the House voted the impeachment and accountability of President Trump. Now the process continues in the Senate – and I hope it fulfills its constitutional responsibilities for impeachment while also working on other pressing matters of this nation ” the president-elect said in a tweet.
Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives, with a handful of Republicans joining Democrats in blaming the outgoing Commander-in-Chief for triggering last week’s siege on the U.S. Capitol.
The measure reached 217 “yes” votes shortly after 4:20 p.m. to make Trump the only president to be impeached twice.
The final vote was 232-197, with 10 Republicans crossing party lines and four Republicans not voting when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) announced around 4:35 p.m.
The move paved the way for a Senate trial which, according to a spokesperson for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Will not begin until Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday.
In an interview earlier this month, House Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) warned Democrats not to send the article to the Senate to give Biden the space to create his legislative agenda.
“I have concerns, as do President Pelosi,” Clyburn told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
“Let’s give President-elect Biden the 100 days he needs to get his agenda going,” he said, “and maybe we’ll send the items out a bit later.”
