Detroit Lions sign three more players for futures

The Detroit Lions have announced that they have signed three other players for futures: defensive back Godwin Igwebuike, tight end Hunter Thedford and defensive end Robert McCray.

No, those decisions weren’t made by newly signed GM Brad Holmes, but more than likely by the Lions interim management team who have been making decisions since Bob Quinn’s dismissal.

The three will sign a futures contract, the Lions will be able to put them on their 90-man roster, but they won’t count against the squad cap until the start of the new year in early 2021, usually in early March.

Igwebuike (5-11, 213) is the most intriguing of the group. Strong in the hitting security, he can become linebacker in sub-packages and contribute on special teams – think Miles Killebrew light.

There was a lot of hype around him in the 2018 Draft, but the NFL teams all passed him and he was not drafted. He first signed with the Buccaneers, then the 49ers, Eagles and Jets, before joining the XFL Seattle Dragons. He was not in the league last year.

Thedford (6-6, 260) played close to end at SMU before moving to Utah for their final season of eligibility. He tried for the Lions last August but didn’t understand at the time.

McCray (6-1, 266) played his college ball in Indiana but was not drafted in 2018. He initially signed with the Chiefs, landing on their practice squad, but in 2019 he joined the Browns. and played in one game, recording a tackle.
