Capitals give Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do headbands to offensive and defensive players of the game this season

Peter Laviolette had plenty of free time in 2020. Canned by the Nashville Predators earlier this year, then forced into quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic, Laviolette frantically watched television to pass the time. One of the shows he particularly enjoyed was Netflix. Cobra Kai – a series of suites The Karate Kid movies.

Laviolette loved the show so much that he let it inspire the Capitals’ ridiculous new postgame price. Plural. I’ll let the coach explain.

Here is the transcript of Laviolette’s presentation inside the locker room to the offensive and defensive players of the match: TJ Oshie (three assists) and Brenden Dillon (first goal since 2019).

Peter Laviolette: Good game. Great first victory. Remarkable work. I was away for a year, so I watched all the shows. Every series there. The best series was Cobra Kai. So I thought about it and got this bandana. Right here for the most offensive player of the game tonight. It would be TJ Oshie. Where are you, Osh?

[loud applause]

Peter Laviolette: Revolve around. I’ll tie it up for you. You can attach the following.

Alex Ovechkin: YEAH. NINJA! NINJA!

[Lavy ties headband tight against TJ’s head]

TJ Oshie: Jesus.

Peter Laviolette: Robbery. We didn’t finish here because then there is Miyagi camp. Strike first. Hit hard. Miyagi is all about defense. So [assistant coach Kevin McCarthy] got her bandana. Go forward.

Kevin McCarthy: We talked before the guys’ offense scores goals, the defense wins championships here. But tenacity is hard to beat. Dilly.

[Player loudly yells YES]

[Absurd laughing]

[Dillon and Oshie do ninja poses]

One of the show’s creators, Jon Hurwitz, was shocked when he saw the Capitals tribute online. “Some of us at @CobraKaiSeries have a new favorite hockey team,” he wrote on Twitter.

Here’s the trailer for the show’s third season.
