Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade enters 2021 NFL Draft

Shaun Wade is heading to the NFL.

Fourth-year and second-year starter Buckeye opted to compete in the 2021 draft, announcing via social media on Friday that he would turn pro.

It’s no surprise that the Ohio state cornerback has decided to officially make it to the league. After exploring the possibility of turning pro after his third season, Wade returned for his junior year in a red shirt looking to increase his draft supply and win a national championship.

Wade won third-team All-Big Ten honors as a first-year starter in 2019, lining up as a cornerback for the Buckeyes. He moved away for the 2020 season and entered the fall as the All-American first team by The Associated Press.

Wade struggled throughout the season in his first year of college as an away corner. That included getting beaten overnight by DeVonta Smith in the National Championship game, a top-down performance in the Sugar Bowl against Clemson and a pair of touchdowns handed to Penn State’s Jahan Dotson in Week 2.

But Wade still earned a nod as an All-American consensus, in the vote that was reached ahead of the college football playoffs. He was named the All-American first team by the Associated Press and Sporting News and made the second team roster for the Football Writers Association of America.

Those All-American honors, however, aren’t likely to improve his draft stock, as he’s gone from a likely first-round pick to a second-round pick in most of the mock drafts.

Wade, who had said after the national championship game that he would consider returning but ultimately decided it was time to turn pro, becomes the first underclass of Buckeye to officially announce that he is in the 2021 draft of the NFL. The deadline for subclasses to be declared for the project is Monday.
