In a federal police statement in Rio de Janeiro, an anonymous 51-year-old Argentinian was arrested on Friday.
An unidentified federal police official in Rio de Janeiro confirmed to CNN that the person arrested was “famous golf champion El Pato”.
Angel Cabrera, known as “El Pato”, won both the Masters and the US Open.
Police said Brazil’s Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant for extradition and the person would be sent to jail until their final extradition to Argentina.
Cabrera has been charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Argentina, as well as a theft offense.
CNN spoke to its attorney, Miguel Gavier, who promised a statement.
In August, Gavier told CNN en Espanol that Cabrera had denied the charges. He said he did not understand why the Interpol Red Notice was issued for Argentina because his client had cooperated and he had obtained a signed statement from the prosecution saying he was not necessary for Cabrera to obtain travel authorization.
Last year, the judge said that in order for Cabrera to remain at large he had to maintain an established residence in Argentina and make himself available to the court when summoned.
“He is innocent in both cases and expects to be absolved on the basis of the evidence that has been gathered,” he said.
Neither Interpol nor the Court of Justice in Cordoba, Argentina, responded to CNN’s calls.
Police said the arrest took place at an apartment in Leblon, south of Rio de Janeiro. Cabrera was indicted in Argentina
According to the Federal Police official, Angel looked surprised but “accepted the arrest, not trying to escape or anything.”
The unnamed Federal Police official told CNN that Angel arrived in Brazil on December 31 from the United States and an arrest warrant was issued by the Supreme Court on January 9.
