Everyone agrees ‘Destiny 2’ must go to sunset

Yesterday we had our first Bungie TWAB Destiny 2 of the New Year, and one of the main goals was the return of a number of weapons from unvaulted destinations in the game, Dreaming City and the Moon.

But these are not all weapons. There are only four for each slot, with new perks and apparently given as dungeon rewards as a motivation to rerun that old content. And no, you can’t just infuse the god throws you may have already saved from these eight weapons. You will have to re-win everything.

While there had been a lot of growling about the extinction for quite some time now, it felt like a turning point. Almost everyone, from regular gamers to community leaders, have come together to voice their displeasure with Destiny 2’s continued removal and reissue of weapons.

And then there’s me, where I strongly objected to the procrastination after thinking it might work initially, which, yeah, I admit it, before someone linked me to my old “Luke Smith is right ”. I maintain that the extinction could have been good for the game if it had been handled correctly, old loot disappears, new rounds of loot to replace it in equal measure. But that’s not what happened, and the implementation of it has been all over the map.

What Destiny 2 is doing with the re-release in particular just doesn’t work from a loot-based game point of view like this. It’s one thing if you bring back old weapons from Destiny 1 that have never been seen or used in Destiny 2 or its modified sandbox. And even it is a little debatable. But that’s a whole new level when you manually take people’s guns off by extinguishing, then reissue them six months to two years later and tell them to re-sharpen them either for the same benefits or slightly different (which aren’t even not guaranteed. Better than the original).

But it’s not just the reissue of old guns, it’s that if you saved them exact old guns in your trunk, hoping they’ll return, whatever. You cannot infuse your old weapons at the current power cap, even if they have been reissue. And even if you could, that creates a separate problem as players would effectively be forced to save every Sunset weapon they loved in a full vault stuck “in case” it ended up being re-released.

It doesn’t matter if the reissued weapons can be strong or good in the current meta. Something broke psychologically with the reward loop here through the procrastination and reissue. I don’t think it’ll be good to revive old dungeons or Blind Well or Altars of Sorrow to gain slightly different re-released weapons that were perfectly usable until last November, when they were all at sunset. And past that, it doesn’t feel good to all piece of loot in Destiny 2 now, knowing it has an expiration date by the time you get it. Gone are the days when 10 to 100 hours of farming for a single god roll was worth it.

The sunset feels like it’s burning the house to kill cockroaches in the kitchen. It’s easy to see how weapons like Revoker, Recluse, and Mountaintop could have been individually closed to avoid stale PvP and PvE meta, and yet they took dozens, hundreds of other weapons with them. Looking at the next list of weapons to take away, everything in Season of Dawn, I just have to ask why? Why is this happening? Why are any of these weapons a problem? The answer is they aren’t, and Bungie just wants us to research new things, and then maybe, maybe they’ll reissue them later so we can get free.

So yeah, it’s time for sunset. It doesn’t work for anyone, not even Bungie, as the excitement for the new weapons is eclipsed by what players are constantly losing and every drop now expires. I’d be amazed if we hit The Witch Queen and the timing was still up at this rate, but it’s a long way off, and it’s going to be a few tough seasons as more and more speed cycles and more old gear. come back to be re obtained. It must end.
