LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – Thousands of Nevadans could see more pay if President-elect Joe Biden’s push to raise the minimum wage to $ 15 an hour becomes a reality, but some business owners fear it will take a huge chunk of their bottom line.
Biden has proposed the increase as part of his $ 1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief stimulus package.
“No one working 40 hours a week should be below the poverty line yet,” Biden said.

13 Action News asked several Las Vegans for their opinion on the matter.
“We have to support people who work,” said Bridget Chua-Hackett.[Those] who are hard working people.
“I actually think $ 15 might not be enough if they have a family,” she added. “So I’m in favor of that.”
“Definitely here in Las Vegas it will have a huge impact,” said Kevin Lay. “Maybe it’s a good thing, maybe it’s a bad thing. I’m not sure.”
“It sounds like a good thing,” Teresa Conde said. “It will help a lot of people who don’t earn this to support their families. But at the same time, I think it might be a jerk.”
Her husband, Luis, is a project manager. He says the money is not the problem, but rather finding people who want to work and perhaps deny higher unemployment benefits.
“I’m offering $ 15 an hour 18,” Luis Conde said. “I have ads on Facebook, on different pages, and people aren’t calling.”
“They just want to live on welfare sometimes,” he speculated.
Some small business owners and entrepreneurs believe that raising the minimum wage will cause them more pain than gain.
Todd Clore owns “Todd’s Unique Dining” and says there are a lot of questions about how this will be implemented, especially when Nevada has already approved a minimum wage increase to $ 11 by 2024.
Plus, the current pandemic isn’t helping either.
“After the pandemic? Yes, I don’t see that happening without losing another big chunk of restaurants and small businesses,” he said.
“But before the pandemic, it would have been a big challenge,” he added.
Biden is expected to present this federal minimum wage proposal and the rest of his plan to Congress next month.
