In a battle of social media superstars, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for what she said was his role in fomenting the Jan.6 riot on Capitol Hill.
“He’s part of this problem,” the Democrat said in a public online meeting Friday with voters in the Bronx and Queens. “And Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook are partially responsible for Wednesday’s events, period.”
The social media mogul, she said, pampered white supremacist groups on Facebook – and even, she accused, attended “dinners with white supremacist sympathizers.”
“They specifically dealt with this type of radicalization differently, that is, with children’s gloves,” AOC said, highlighting his controversial exchange with Zuckerberg during a congressional hearing in 2019.
“I asked her a specific question about election-related disinformation… and the connection between that disinformation and white supremacist ties,” she said. “We saw what was coming for a long time.”
Ocasio-Cortez has claimed for months that Facebook’s use of conservative outlet The Daily Caller in its fact-checking efforts is proof of Zuckerberg’s sympathy for white supremacists.
“There is a very clear link here,” she insisted on Friday.
The Daily Caller dismissed Ocasio-Cortez’s accusations, calling them “offensive”.
“Currently, they’re doing as much damage control as possible,” AOC said Friday, highlighting Facebook’s decision to remove President Trump’s access to the platform following last week’s violence.
“But they knew,” she says. “And not only did they know, but they allowed it.”
