Urban Meyer is in the process of building his first staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he is said to have taken a prominent name in the college ranks. According to a report by Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, Meyer is set to hire former Louisville, Texas and USF head coach Charlie strong like his assistant head coach. Thamel also reports that Strong will coach a position, likely linebackers.

Stadium’s Brett McMurphy was the first to announce that Strong would be stepping down as analyst in Alabama for the Jaguars. Strong’s the combined record as a college head coach between his three stops is 74-53.

From 2010 to 2013, Strong was very successful as Louisville’s head coach. In his last two seasons with the Cardinals, Strong had a 23-3 combined. After that, Texas hired Strong to be their next head coach. Strong never really set foot under him with the Longhorns as he failed to register a winning season and was 16-21 overall. Strong was then the head coach of the USF from 2017 to 2019. After going 10-2 in his first year with the Bulls, he was sacked after a 4-8 season in 2019.

During his introductory press conference with the Jaguars, Meyer was asked about hiring staff from his most recent program, Ohio State. Meyer said he could bring someone down from Columbus but didn’t want to be too disruptive to the Buckeyes.

“I spoke to Gene (Smith) and I spoke to Coach (Ryan) Day and I will not (raid their staff),” Meyer said. “I’m not there yet. It’s the best infrastructure in college sports. I’m not touching, there might be one that goes, but I’m not going to do that to this organization now.”

When it comes to his approach to NFL play, Meyer will be fine-tuning the way he handles the game on the pitch. As a college head coach, Meyer has been involved in the play call, but he will step back and let his offensive coordinator take full control in this area.

“I’m not going to be the keeper of the game. I’ve been active in my career, but I’m not (here),” Meyer said. “Basically, I think the NFL is different. One thing about attacking football is that you find weaknesses. In the NFL, it’s all the best players in America.”
