Longtime family bar gets a lifeline from Dave Portnoy’s Barstool Fund as he struggles during the coronavirus pandemic.
Peter McManus Café, one of the oldest pubs in town, got the call from Portnoy just hours after asking for help.
During the call, Portnoy told owner Justin McManus it was “an easy story to follow.”
“I’m glad I picked a random FaceTime from a Boston number that I didn’t have in my phone,” McManus told FOX Business “Varney & Co.” “Everything was pretty quick.”

The 84-year-old bar, founded by McManus’ great-grandfather, spans four generations and prides itself on its family lineage.
“My great-grandfather is Peter McManus, and he started… our family business. It was my grandfather, James Sr., who was in WWII and got both Purple Hearts.
While McManus doesn’t know how much his business will receive, he hopes the promised monthly payments will be enough to stay afloat for the foreseeable future.

McManus explained that “one of the advantages” of this fund over a traditional grant is the ongoing financial support.
“They said they wanted to be there with you every month and… move forward until this pandemic is over or… until… we see numbers like we were before so that … I don’t need any additional help.

McManus went on to say that they “will fight to the end”.
“We have always been fighters,” he said. “Our family crest is honesty and bravery cannot be overcome.”
