A look at fanfiction
If you are not part of the Speech, you are in luck. Let me give you the short version of the last thing to do: Fanfiction is bad.
Some consider the origin of fan fiction to be the cheeky Kirk / Spock stories distributed in fanzines in the 1960s and 1970s. This is a mistake. The plots and the characters we saw Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet had been familiar for decades before Shakespeare wrote his versions. He wrote fanfic. Likewise Snorri Sturluson, who simply engaged the northern sagas in writing after having been shared via oral tradition for centuries. These sagas were then vetted by well-known fan communities like the Coalbiters, who wrote spinoff works in the 20th century, which we now know as The Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia.
Just as there are many ways to be a person, there are also many ways to be a writer. And all the identities of writers and people start with, uh, well, theft. We see what other people are doing, we synthesize it, we determine which parts we like and which parts we don’t like, and then we incorporate it into ourselves. It could be the informal friendliness of Douglas Adams, or the humanistic dignity of Octavia Butler, or the Bender fashion of Breakfast Club, or the confidence of Frank-N-Furter.
It is not the proper role of a confident adult writer (or a confident adult person) to despise the same process that brought us about, the same process that many of us are exploring and still practicing today. The writer you’re reading now has also been a fanfic, and no, you can’t read him.
