At first, I was against the idea of the 49ers trading for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The deal would cost the 49ers at least three first-round picks and likely six overall picks, not to mention all the money Watson would cost the 49ers. He signed a four-year extension of $ 160 million in September. It is extremely expensive.
But that expansion doesn’t technically kick off until 2022. Which means Watson won’t technically make a lot of money in 2021 by NFL Superstars standards. So if the 49ers were to trade for him, they would have to pay him “only” $ 10.94 million in 2021, or about 6% of their salary cap.
A very good deal.
So I changed my mind. Here’s what I would do if I were general manager for the 49ers:
I would cut off Jimmy Garoppolo and create $ 24 million in ceiling space. Then I would trade whatever it takes to get Watson so I can pay him $ 10.94 million next season. And with the money I saved, I would improve the offensive line. And maybe the 49ers would win the Super Bowl. They had had tremendous luck.
And then in 2022, when Watson was to make $ 35 million and take over 15% of the 49ers’ cap space, I’d trade it in and get all the interim capital I gave up to have it.
Watson would be a one-year rental.
Does this sound crazy?
What’s crazier would be paying him 15% of the 49ers cap space. Because no quarterback in free agency history has won a Super Bowl while occupying more than 13.1% of their team’s ceiling space.
A player should never occupy 15% of a team’s ceiling space, no matter how good that player is. And Watson isn’t even the best quarterback in the league. He’s on the edge of the top five.
So hire his services for a season, then ship him out of town. He would be a phenomenal one-year solution to the quarterback.
