We rarely get the chance to meet our heroes let alone work with them, which happened between The ant Man franchise manager Peyton reed and Star wars actor Mark Hamill. Fans got to see Hamill’s triumphant return of Luke Skywalker in all his Jedi glory on the Disney + series The Mandalorian in its season two finale. The opportunity was supposed to present itself during the 2017 sequels The Last Jedi, but no saber clashed between the professor and his former student Kylo Ren in the decisive battle.
Since The Mandalorian took place shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983), the stars aligned for the Jedi to return to his X-Wing in the decisive finale that revealed Grogu’s master saving the day. Rather than going for practical effects and heavy makeup, the series opted to use aging CG with Hamill providing the voice of his young self in the episode “The Rescue”. Reed directed the epic episode and tweeted Hamill about the inspiration he grew up with a photo of the actor on his Landspeeder taken at the time of A new hope (1977).
“Dear @HamillHimself,” Reed has begun. “When I was a kid, this picture hung on my bedroom wall. STAR WARS, and Luke Skywalker in particular, meant a lot to me. Some things never change. It was an honor and a dream come true to work with. you. @themandalorian. Thank you. #MTFBWY “Hamill replied the next day. “Dear @MrPeytonReed, I am so grateful to have had the unexpected opportunity to see my character again when he was still a symbol of hope and optimism. Your assured leadership and kindness have been a crucial part of the process. ‘experience and represent more to me than I can say. #Thanks “The actor also showed a similar appreciation to The Mandalorian Creator Jon Favreau and co-executive producer Dave filoni for the chance to relive his character once again. He also responded to co-star Ming-Na Wen, who plays bounty hunter Fennec Shand. The two seasons of The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney +.
