MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie responded to a report of a submerged tug along the sea wall outside of Marquette on Friday.
At 11:40 a.m. on January 15, the Coast Guard received a report of a tug submerged in 26 feet of water off the sea wall at Marquette.
The 30-foot tug was heading for the lower harbor when it lost power and struck the breakwater due to the weather conditions at the scene. Both people on board were able to disembark safely from the vessel without any reported injuries. Respondents from the Michigan Department of the Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and the Coast Guard attended the scene.
The owner of the barge began rescue operations to retrieve the vessel. Maximum pollution potential has been determined at 100 gallons of oil and diesel fuel. There is no glare coming from the ship. The Coast Guard continues to work with EGLE and the shipowner to mitigate damage to the environment.
The Coast Guard works in coordination with EGLE to ensure the safety of the public and the environment. Local emergency managers have been informed of the sinking of the vessel.
