U.S. equity markets rallied on Tuesday in President Trump’s last full day in office as traders awaited Senate testimony from Treasury Secretary candidate Janet Yellen on Capitol Hill.

Yellen, the former Federal Reserve chairperson, will appear before the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday for her confirmation hearing. Yellen will say Congress must “act big” to tackle the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, including expanding more aid to families and providing additional funds to speed up vaccine distribution.

The German DAX 30 accelerated the advance in Europe, up 0.3%, while the UK FTSE 100 rose 0.12% and the French CAC 40 edged up 0.08.
Asian markets finished mixed, with China’s Shanghai Composite slipping 0.83%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.39% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 2.7%.
