Everything we know about Kyogre

Kyogre debuted alongside the majority of Gen 3 in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire; although it was exclusive to Pokémon Sapphire, as it was that game’s mascot. This legendary Pokémon was also tied to the Pokémon Sapphire storyline, with the evil Team Aqua planning to use its power to flood the majority of the world. Obviously, they were big fans of the Waterworld movie.

Kyogre, along with Groudon and Rayquaza, is a member of the Weather Trio – a trio of legendary Pokémon native to the Hoenn region. Each member of the trio has control over a specific elemental sphere, Kyogre being the hydropshere, meaning he controls all of the water in the Pokémon universe.

Kyogre could have been inspired by the Leviathan, which is a mythical sea serpent, or he could simply be a personification of the world’s oceans, his body being similar to that of a whale.
