Among us, the developers explain why things “take so long”

Among Us became a surprise hit in 2020. The Hidden Role Murder was originally released in 2018 and managed to make its way to stardom late last year thanks in large part to numerous Twitch streamers. Sadly, this success created some challenges for the developers of Innersloth. Yesterday they posted a dev blog explaining why development and updates were taking so long, and giving fans a bit of what was going on behind the scenes.

“Among Us has gained incredible traction quite late in 2020, which we weren’t expecting, and it meant a LOT of changes for us,” the developers say. “Not only did we have to get back to work on Among Us after we thought it was done, but we also had to set ourselves up in a more sustainable way to work on the game. We had to spend 2 months restructuring, defining new processes and finding external partners to help us manage on board. “

The dev team was originally only three people, although they have added a fourth this year. They add that they have heard suggestions to hire more people to help, but rushing to attract new people can often be damaging rather than helpful.

All of that organizational stuff meant that they had to spend some time away from the game, but ultimately it all means development will be a bit easier in the future.

“Thank you very much for your patience while you wait for the next big update!” Add Innersloth. “We want to do more for you to show yourself how grateful we are, but without sacrificing the quality and values we had before it exploded.”

To that end, they will soon unveil a 2021 roadmap for Among Us so people can get a better idea of what’s to come. They are also a reminder that the game’s new Airship map will arrive early this year. An account system is also on the way, the first update will focus on moderation so you can flag people in the game when needed.
