The other shoe fell off. The NHL has published the Washington Capitals downtime due to COVID protocols.

The list is the Russian Caps: attackers Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex ovechkin, defender, Dmitry Orlovand goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov.

Earlier today, the Caps were fined $ 100,000 for violating COVID protocols.

Being on this list does not mean that these players have COVID or even that they have tested positive. A little background from the NHL:

Continuing the remainder of the 2020-21 season, the NHL shares the names of players “unavailable” to the club (to train, travel or play in games) due to COVID protocols. These “COVID protocol absences” can be the result of a number of factors including: (1) an initial positive test that remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed according to the positive test protocol ; (2) compulsory isolation for symptomatic persons according to the positive test protocol; (3) quarantine required as high risk close contact according to positive testing protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and / or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons, as outlined in the COVID-19 protocol.

No further details will be provided by the League or the Club, including the precise reason why the player is unavailable or the duration of his absence.

We should have more details soon.

Update, 8:10 p.m.: The Capitals and Alex Ovechkin have released statements.

The Caps are scheduled to host the Buffalo Sabers on Friday night.
