In one of his last acts as President of the United States, Donald Trump issued more than 140 pardons and commutations on Tuesday evening (January 19). Among the beneficiaries of leniency was the CEO of Roc Nation Desiree Perez, Death Row Records’ first funder Michael “Harry-O” Harris and rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black, according to the White House.
Perez was granted full pardon for being involved in a conspiracy to distribute drugs, the White House has said, a conviction more than 25 years old. “Since her conviction, Ms. Perez has taken full responsibility for her actions and changed her life,” the White House said in a statement. “She has had a paid job and has championed criminal justice reform in her community.”
“I am grateful to have received a grace and to have officially closed this chapter of my life in the eyes of the law,” Perez said in a statement to Billboard. “I have taken full responsibility for my mistakes 25 years ago, but I am also extremely proud of my personal growth, persistence and accomplishments since then. This forgiveness reinforces my lifelong commitment to advocating for criminal justice reform and social justice initiatives.
