Pete Kwiatkowski was content to stay in Washington for an eighth season. In fact, other schools had inquired about the openings and none piqued the interest of the defensive coordinator. But when Jeff Banks, the new Texas Special Teams coordinator and longtime coaching acquaintance, contacted last weekend to gauge Kwiatkowski’s interest in the Longhorns’ defensive coordinator position, Kwiatkowski knew that it was time to consider a change.

On Tuesday, he accepted an offer to become defensive coordinator under new Texas coach Steve Sarkisian.

Kwiatkowski spoke to The Athletic on Wednesday afternoon about his time in Washington, the opportunity that awaits him in Texas, and why he feels now is the time to take a step. Answers have been edited slightly for clarity and length.
