Bears’ Jay Rodgers reportedly left to work for Los Angeles Chargers

It looks like Jay Rodgers won’t be the Bears’ next defensive coordinator.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the defensive line coach is leaving Chicago for a position on Brandon Staley’s staff with the Los Angeles Chargers. NBC Sports Chicago can also confirm the move:

Rodgers, who joined the Bears in 2015 as a D-line coach, was one of Matt Nagy’s most successful staff assistants. He and Staley both worked under then-defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in 2018, when the Bears ended the year with arguably the best defense of the past decade.

Rodgers’ departure means the only internal candidate left is safety coach Sean Desai. The team also reportedly looked at Mike Singletary, Colts DB coach Jonathan Gannon, Cowboys defensive assistant George Edwards and former DC Cardinals and Giants James Bettcher.
