Performing her 2010 flagship hit “Firework” in a red, white and blue gown, the Grammy-nominated pop performer performed outside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as President Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff watched.
Fans were delighted on social media, with one saying, “KATY PERRY HAS COME AND DELIVERED.”
Another wrote: “You are not officially President of the United States until Katy Perry chants ‘Fireworks’ to you.”
Chrissy Teigen even took to Twitter, writing, “And then @katyperry killed him.” (Teigen’s husband, singer John Legend, performed Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” earlier in the evening.)
“Now THAT is how Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ is worth singing,” wrote another fan.
“Lady Gaga starts the day perfectly and Katy Perry ends her perfectly. We have been blessed, ”wrote another.
Lady Gaga performed at Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony earlier today, where she sang the national anthem.
The day was filled with major performances, with Jennifer Lopez also joining in to sing a medley of “America the Beautiful” and “This Land Is Your Land”. Country singer Garth Brooks was also present during the swearing-in to sing “Amazing Grace”.
The rest of the “Celebrating America” special, meanwhile, featured additional sets from Justin Timberlake and Ant Clemons, Foo Fighters, Demi Lovato, Jon Bon Jovi, the aforementioned John Legend and Bruce Springsteen.
