Switch Expands Console Market, Says Interpreter

Consumer analytics company notes sharp rise last year among Switch owners who don’t have other consoles

Nintendo is expanding the console market with the Switch, just like it has done with the Wii, according to a new report from consumer intelligence agency Interpret.

According to Interpret’s quarterly New Media Measure survey of 9,000 U.S. consumers, 2020 saw a significant increase in the number of Switch owners without another game console in their home.

Last year, 25% of Switch owners said they didn’t own any other console, more than double the 12% of respondents in 2019 who owned a Switch but nothing else.

The Switch also gained traction as a second console choice, as the number of people reporting owning another console besides the Switch rose from 25% in 2019 to 35% last year.

“We can infer that Nintendo has expanded the overall console pie (just like it did with the original Wii) as new console players enter the market,” Interpreter said.
