Former NFL offensive lineman Tony Jones, who started on back-to-back Broncos title teams in the 1990s, died on Friday aged 54, according to the team.
A cause of death was not provided.
Jones, known as “T-Bone”, played 13 seasons with the Browns, Ravens and Broncos.
An undrafted free agent from West Carolina, he was successful as Denver’s starting right tackle in Super Bowl XXXII and left starting tackle in Super Bowl XXXIII.
“We have lost a great man,” former teammate Rod Smith wrote on Twitter. “It turned out to be a hell of a ball game. We love you and we miss you Bone. One of the Broncos’ all-time best tackles. The greatest dresser ever!
After an early exit from the playoffs to end the 1996 season, the Broncos acquired Jones from the Ravens and he would help them win the Super Bowl the next two years. In the first Super Bowl, he held Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White sackless and limited it to a single tackle. He was named to the Broncos Top 100 squad in 2019.
“Terrifyingly sad news today, Tony was a great teammate and a wonderful man,” former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey tweeted of Jones. “Always dressed new and always smiling. Lisa and I send love and peace to her family.
