It’s no secret that Michigan football, after Jim Harbaugh signed his contract extension earlier this month, has significantly overhauled the coaching staff.
The first announcement came in the form of former Wolverines all-time lead Mike Hart returning to Ann Arbor to coach the running backs after spending the past four seasons doing so in Indiana. Next, Mike Macdonald was announced as the new defensive coordinator after spending seven years with the Baltimore Ravens. The rest of the defensive staff were proclaimed this week, with the retention of defensive line coach Shaun Nua and linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary, and the additions of safety coach George Helow and the cornerback coach / defensive co-coordinator Maurice Linguist.
Everything seemed to be sorted out, but it turns out the tinkering wasn’t done yet.
Ed Warinner, the three-year-old Wolverines offensive line coach who turned around after a few moribund years from 2015 to 2017, was apparently safe. However, in the college football world – especially after a 2-4 campaign – there were no holy cows as Michigan football looks set to part ways with the longtime offensive line coach. The Wolverines will hire former wide receiver Ron Bellamy, whose West Bloomfield program just won a state championship.
Given the offensive lineman’s turnaround, Warinner had become a fan favorite, with many Corn and Blue fans saying they would welcome a lifetime contract for the 36-year-old veteran.
A graduate of Mount Union, Warinner spent most of his coaching career in the Army, where he coached from 1987 to 1999. He also coached in the State of Michigan, made several trips to Kansas. , spent a year in Illinois, spent two years at Notre Dame, won a national championship at Ohio State, and spent a year in Minnesota.
For now, the staff are as mentioned above, Jay Harbaugh coaching special teams. There is no official word yet on whether tight ends coach Sherrone Moore has been selected at this point.
