Detroit Lions hire Ray Agnew as assistant general manager

The Detroit Lions are apparently not done adding more talent to their front office. After hiring Brad Holmes as the team’s next GM and adding former NFL GM John Dorsey in an unspecified role, Detroit will apparently add an assistant GM as well.

Via Tom Pelissero of the NFL NetworkRams Professional Staff Director Ray Agnew is hired as the Lions’ next Deputy CEO.

Agnew is a former NFL player, having been drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 1990 draft. He enjoyed an 11-year career with the Patriots, Giants and Rams. After his playing career, he joined the Rams, working his way up the ranks until he reached his current role as Director of Professional Personnel, a position he has held for four years.

Interestingly, the Lions will now have two key staff at the Rams front office. Holmes was the director of college scouting, so combined with Agnew, they’ve got people on both sides of the player staff acquisition.

Earlier in the week, Holmes described how Rams general manager Les Snead was running the personnel department, saying both sides had been consulted when adding players to both the draft and the agency. free.

“Basically he got us involved in the decision-making process on both fronts, be it pro (or) college,” Holmes explained during his introductory press conference with the Lions.

At this point, Agnew, a defensive tackle himself, was apparently one of the people beating the table for Aaron Donald in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Regardless of how power dynamics work in Detroit right now, the Lions have suddenly added two very experienced employees to their front office as they begin to seriously overthrow their decision makers at the top of the organization.
