Nicklas Backstrom scores behind the net

That cunning Nicklas Backstrom is again.

On Sunday, in the Capitals’ 4-3 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabers, Backstrom scored the game’s biggest goal for the home side. And it was no ordinary tally.

Like a wizard, Backstrom scored BEHIND THE NET.

I’m serious.

Video

Backstrom scored after Jakub Vrana threw a wobbly cross-over pass to the lunge. The rebounding puck escaped a Capitals player who struck the net and a Sabers defenseman. Then Sabers keeper Linus Ullmark tried to push him back. Ullmark couldn’t clear him and Backstrom ended up with the cookie loose, behind the goal line. Backstrom decided to shoot Ullmark out of the crease, and put Ullmark’s elbow puck into the net.

Look how happy the boys were after the goal.

Backstrom, who also assisted in the game, had seven points in the Capitals’ first six games, including four goals, a team-high.

The Capitals would ultimately lose the game in a shootout, but Backstrom’s tally gave the Capitals one ranking point in every game they have played this season. Washington now has a six-game one-run streak (3-0-3) and is undefeated in regulation.

Sunday also marked Backstrom’s 962nd game as a capital. Backstrom topped legend Peter Bondra on the franchise’s all-time roster, earning him kudos from the 500-goal scorer.
