Speaking to Britain Sun Diary, the actress opened up about the negative attacks she found online shortly after winning the 2012 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress Wretched. Among the complaints she encountered: it was “boring” and “unpleasant”.

“I really don’t want to go back to the past but I had my monster there, I turned the internet on and I hated myself and it was like a big thing,” she told the Sun, but added: “It was a very good thing for me personally.”

Hathaway, now a 38-year-old married mother of two in the film Locked, explained that the abuse made her realize that her trust had to come from herself and not from the public. This lesson came at a crucial time, after her Oscar-winning role as the tragic Fantine in Les Misérables, which required her to cut her hair and lose weight.

“You’re supposed to be happy,” she said of her Oscar highlight at the 2013 ceremony. “I didn’t feel that way.

“I felt bad for standing there in a dress that cost more than some people will see in their lifetime, and winning an award for portraying the pain that has always been part of our collective experience as human beings. I tried to pretend that I was happy and that I got called out about it, in a big way.

In the end, she feels more “empowered” to have gone through these difficult times.

“You can be incredibly empowered through these things,” she said of adversity. “So I guess what I would say is when the bad shit happens don’t be afraid – go ahead, follow it.

This echoes advice she gave to climate activist Greta Thunberg in 2019, telling the teenager in an Instagram post that ‘under every bridge ever built there was also a troll accompanying her – sometimes more than one. ⁣⁣

“The bridge – that is, what connects and uplifts – is more important than the troll,” she wrote. “Stay strong. Keep going.”

Hathaway – who credited her close friendships with helping her cope – also shared her stress of parenting two young boys on lockdown. (She and her husband Adam Shulman share Jonathan, 4, and Jack, 1.)

“At the start of the lockdown we were all so overwhelmed and there was a lot to deal with and I needed a release but I didn’t want to scare my kids so I screamed a lot into a pillow”, a- she admitted.

“Adam is awesome,” she added. “If you’re going to be quarantined with another adult, it’s my husband.”
