As has been the case in recent years, former UFC Champion BJ Penn has once again made headlines for all the wrong reasons. According to a report released Monday by MMA Fighting, “The Prodigy” was arrested Saturday in Honoka’a, Hawaii on suspicion of DUI. He was released a few hours later pending an investigation.
According to Hawaii County Police Department spokeswoman Denise Laitinen, the arrest came after officers responded to a reckless driving complaint. Unfortunately for Penn, everything was captured on video and you can see and hear him act in a belligerent manner, including yelling obscenities and shouting the n-word.
MMA Junkie obtained more details on the incident.
Jay Penn of Hilo, also known as BJ Penn, was arrested on Saturday January 23, 2021, for driving a vehicle under the influence of intoxicants. At approximately 4:51 p.m. Saturday afternoon, officers from the Hamakua District Hawaii Police Department responded to a report of a reckless driver on commercial property in Honoka’a.
Upon arriving at the scene, police learned from witnesses that Penn had arrived at the company earlier in a gray Toyota pickup truck. Before police arrived, the 42-year-old was seen talking loudly to employees and then left the property recklessly.
While officers were at the scene to discuss the incident with company employees, they saw Penn return to the property. Officers contacted Penn and observed signs of impairment, arrested him for driving a vehicle under the influence of intoxicants. Penn was then released pending further investigation.
It wasn’t Penn’s first encounter with alcohol-related issues. In February 2020, the 42-year-old man was involved in a single-vehicle crash when his van lost control outside a shopping mall in Hawaii. He was hospitalized subsequently placed under investigation for DUI.
As for his fighting career, Penn last competed in 2019 against Clay Guida and lost by unanimous decision to compile a seven-game losing streak. The UFC decided to release him from the business after his involvement in a bar fight that same year.
