The Green Bay Packers will have a new special team leader in 2021.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Matt LaFleur and the Packers are parting ways with special teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga.

LaFleur initially hired Mennenga when building his first coaching staff with the Packers in 2019. Over the past two seasons, the Packers have placed 26th and 29th in the NFL on Rick Gosselin’s annual special team rankings.

This season, the Packers’ special teams have been responsible for many mistakes and big plays, including two punt return touchdowns, a blocked punt and a sloppy kickoff restart. They also had one of the worst returning units in the NFL on punts and kicks.

Mennenga replaced Ron Zook, who was Mike McCarthy’s last special teams coordinator. The Packers placed 32nd on special teams ahead of Mennenga’s arrival.
