Discord has banned r / WallStreetBets server, company confirmed The edge. Reddit’s WallStreetBets subdirectory is the engine of an unprecedented GameStop title rally and has received a lot of attention in the press as the title continues to soar.
Discord says it did not ban the server for financial fraud – it was instead banned because it continued to allow “hateful and discriminatory content after repeated warnings.” The edge gained access to the server and can confirm the claim that the channel’s users were spamming hate speech, including racial slurs.
Here is the full statement from Discord:
The server has been on the radar of our Trust and Security team for some time due to occasional content that violates our community guidelines, including hate speech, glorifying violence and spreading false information. Over the past few months, we have issued several warnings to the server administrator.
Today we decided to remove the server and its owner from Discord to continue allowing hateful and discriminatory content after repeated warnings.
To be clear, we haven’t banned this server due to financial frauds related to GameStop or other actions. Discord hosts a wide variety of personal finance discussions, from investment clubs and day traders to students and professional financial advisers. We are monitoring this situation and in the event of allegations of illegal activity, we will cooperate with the authorities as appropriate.
r / WallStreetBets describes itself as “like 4chan has found a Bloomberg terminal”, and many comments on the subreddit contain offensive language.
If you could get into the Discord, it was chaotic, with messages arriving at a rapid pace and many voices talking to each other simultaneously. Check-out this video from my colleague Tom Warren to get an idea of what it sounded like (note: you might want to turn the volume down before clicking play, as the vocals are quite loud):
