A group of Oregon health workers, stuck in the snow, decided to offer coronavirus vaccinations to their stranded fellow drivers to avoid potentially wasting their remaining doses of the drug.
As The New York Times reports, Michael Weber, public health director for Josephine County, Oregon, got stranded in the middle of the freeway during a snowstorm. He and a group of public health workers were taking doses of the Moderna vaccine in Grants Pass, about 30 miles away.
Realizing that they could be stranded on the road for hours, the group of health workers decided to offer the vaccine to those who were also stranded around them. Weber told The Times that most of the drivers laughed and refused the shot due to the unusual nature of the situation. According to Weber, a doctor and an ambulance were present to oversee the administration.
“We had one individual who was so happy he took off his shirt and jumped out of the car,” Weber said.
“It was a strange conversation,” Weber added. “Imagine being stuck on the side of the road in a snowstorm and someone coming up and saying, ‘Hey. Would you like a bullet in the arm? “
Six doses of the vaccine were eventually administered on the snow-covered highway, reports the Times.
“Honestly, once we knew we weren’t going to be back in town in time to use the vaccine, it was just the obvious choice,” Weber said, saying it was “one of the operations. the coolest. ”
“Our No. 1 rule right now is that nothing is wasted.”

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 600,000 doses have been distributed so far in Oregon with over 325,000 doses administered.
