Ella Emhoff signs IMG models

Mr Bart first became aware of Ms Emhoff’s style while raising funds for Ms Harris during the presidential primaries. “I noticed her as soon as she walked through the door,” he says. In the summer of 2020, he and Ms Emhoff started talking about the possibility of her joining IMG. They had a Zoom call, and she showed him her loom and some of her mesh pieces.

On her Instagram account, Ms Emhoff often posts her knitting projects, such as brightly colored striped pants, although she notes that she is currently closed to orders. She also shows her support for the slow fashion movement and the queer community. Her past modeling appearances have included a shoot for Buffalo Zine, an independent fashion magazine.

Since Ms Harris’ appointment in August, her modern stepfamily has garnered a lot of attention and praise. Ms Emhoff described her stepmother, father and mother (Kerstin Emhoff, founder of a production company) as “one unit, like a parental team of three”.

This summer, in a recorded video for the Democratic National Convention, Ms. Emhoff referred to the vice president by her nickname, “Momala, the greatest mother-in-law in the world.” (As for the second man, she and her brother, Cole, 26, call him by his first name, Doug, almost exclusively. Ahead of the inauguration, Ms. Emhoff told the New York Times that she hoped that he would start knitting, “Like I do.”)

The dedication ceremony brought a new level of public attention to Ms. Emhoff. It wasn’t just her outfit – dressed by Jill Lincoln and Jordan Johnson, who dressed Ms Emhoff in a burgundy Batsheva dress under the Miu Miu coat – or the Thom browne coat, skirt and tie, with her hints of red, white and blue, which she wore to the Covid-19 memorial service the night before, but the way she maybe agitated his eyebrows at Mike Pence on the Capitol steps.
