But hours later, the man from North Carolina checked his lottery tickets and found he had won a $ 2 million Mega Millions prize.
Dowe was on his way to work on Saturday – the day after the billion dollar jackpot was drawn – when he collided with the deer in his 2021 Kia K5, officials at the North Carolina Education Lottery said.
“So, I just went crazy, I went home, I went to bed and I fell asleep,” he said in a statement Tuesday. “Then I woke up and checked my tickets.
“I checked the fourth ticket and saw the ‘4’, then the next number and the next number and the next number. I’m like, ‘Wow!’ It was just crazy. “
Dowe ended up matching all five white balls – beating the odds of 1 in 12.6 million – to win the $ 1 million prize. It was doubled to $ 2 million when the 2X Megaplier was pulled.
“I went and showed my dad and my mom and everyone was happy,” he said in the statement.
Dowe claimed his prize on Monday and took home $ 1.4 million, after federal and state withholding taxes.
The winning ticket for the Mega Millions jackpot was sold at a Kroger store in Novi, Michigan, according to a Mega Millions press release.
Dowe plans to spend the money on some repairs at his parents’ house, pay off his niece’s car and protect his savings, the statement said.
He will also have his new car repaired, he says – and pay it back.
