Today, Google Play announced an upcoming policy change that will allow Android gaming and betting apps in more countries. These apps are currently only available in four stores around the world.
At the moment, “Real Money Gaming Apps” are only available in Brazilian, Irish, French and UK Play Stores. They include online casino games, lotteries, sports betting, and daily fantasy sports.
Previously, Android users would download an APK directly from a gambling service’s website and load it aside. This method has inherent risks and today’s decision offers a safer path for users in many other countries.
From March 1, developers will be able to offer gambling applications in 15 other countries:
Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden and the United States
In a statement, DraftKings said it will bring its Sportsbook & Casino app to the United States when the new Play Store policy takes effect.
Given the “sensitive nature” of gambling, developers must complete a Google Play application process and meet other requirements before their Android apps appear:
- The app must comply with all applicable laws and industry standards for each country in which it is distributed
- The developer must have a valid gaming license for each country or state / territory in which the app is distributed
Applications should be classified “for adults only” and “prevent underage users from using them”. Additionally, users who are not in a trusted state / territory should be prevented from accessing. The app must be free to download and not use Google Play’s built-in billing system.
Google warns that “attempts to bypass the certification process” and “repeated or serious violations” will result in the complete removal of applications.
