Armie Hammer will no longer star in the upcoming Paramount Plus series “The Offer,” which tells the behind-the-scenes story of the making of “The Godfather”. Variety learned from sources.
It was announced in early December that Hammer was set on directing the series as Al Ruddy, who produced “The Godfather” in 1972. The 10-episode series details Ruddy’s experience working on the iconic film. The search is now launched for a new seed.
Representatives for Hammer and Paramount did not immediately respond to VarietyThis is for comment. This message will be updated if they respond.
News of Hammer’s exit from the series comes weeks after he also dropped the romantic comedy “Shotgun Wedding,” in which he was scheduled to star alongside Jennifer Lopez, after a series of unverified Instagram direct messages allegedly written by Hammer leaked online. The posts described graphic sexual fantasies, including cannibalism.
Hammer previously issued a statement on the controversy, saying he would not respond to “bull claims,” further describing the social media outcry over the posts as “attacks [him]. “
“The Offer” was one of many high profile projects announced when ViacomCBS revealed it was renaming the CBS All Access streaming service to Paramount Plus in September. Others included Oscar winner Taylor Sheridan’s spy drama “Lioness” as well as a reboot of the musical documentary series “Behind the Music”.
Michael Tolkin writes and produces “The Offer”, with Ruddy, Nikki Toscano and Leslie Grief also executive producer. Paramount Television Studios will produce.
With the name change and the addition of library shows from BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and more content from the Paramount Pictures Vault, Paramount Plus will offer around 30,000 episodes and movies. BET, Comedy Central, and other ViacomCBS imprints will also produce original series for Paramount Plus.
