Coaching Notes: Pack, Rathman, McCardell

The Packers make a change in special teams. They fire the ST coordinator Shawn mennenga, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter). A longtime college coach, Mennenga previously served as an assistant coach for the Browns before joining. Matt LaFleurin 2019. Packers set to promote ST assistant coach Maurice drayton to replace Mennenga, Pelissero tweets. At least one other team was interested in Drayton for such a role, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Drayton was in contention for this post two years ago.

  • Mike Pettine may not be locked up as the Packers’ defensive coordinator next season. The veteran DC chose not to sign an overtime last year, and ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky notes that his contract has ended. The Packers have invested heavily in their passing rush and used three first-round picks on defenders from 2018-19, but have gone from 15th in defensive DVOA in 2019 to 17th this season. Pettine is a legacy of Mike McCarthystaff, arrived in 2018.
  • Foals running back trainer Tom rathman announced his retirement on Thursday. The Colts hired Rathman in 2017, after his eight-year tenure as the 49ers running backs coach ended. Rathman tried to retire in 2019 and 2020, but the Colts were able to convince him to stay, according to Athletic’s Stephen Holder (on Twitter). A decorated full-back who won two Super Bowls with the 49ers, Rathman coached running backs from 1997 to 2020. Sixteen of those years have come to San Francisco.
  • Stay with the Colts, they hire ex-Jaguars QB coach Scott Milanovich replace Marcus Brady in this post, Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star tweets. Milanovich coached the Jacksonville QBs from 2017-19. Otherwise, he spent his CFL career, having coached the Toronto Argonauts and, in 2020, the Edmonton Eskimos. The Colts promoted Brady to the OC job last week.
  • Long-standing NFL expansion Keenan McCardell resurface in Minnesota. The Vikings hires McCardell as receiver coach, according to Florida Times-Union’s Gene Frenette (on Twitter). A longtime Jaguars pass-catcher who burst into the coaching ranks in 2010, McCardell was the Jacksonville receivers coach from 2017 to 20 under. Doug Brown.
  • Ex-Colts DC Ted monachino will be the Falconscoach of outside linebackers under Arthur smith next season. Monachino, Indy DC from 2016 to 2017, spent the last two years with the Bears. The Falcons have also hired Jon hoke to train the defensive backs. The older brother of Maryland HC Brady hoke, Jon was the Terrapins’ defensive coordinator from 2019-20, but coached the NFL DBs for several seasons.
