The 2020 college football season has just ended with the decimation of the Ohio State Buckeyes at the hands of Alabama Crimson Tide. And now? It’s time for the 2021 NFL Draft. Better yet, it’s time for the Mock 2021 NFL Draft.
The players weigh their options. April is approaching and many have already opted for the draft by forfeiting the remainder of their 2020 college football season – and thereby forfeiting any eligibility they had left behind.
Prepare for a full first round of the 2021 NFL Draft
This 2021 NFL Draft is being compiled based on the section of the draft in which the order of picks has already been determined, as well as expert predictions on where the final draft picks will end up. This draft also takes into account that no trades will be made because, well, we can’t predict with precision.
So now, in the words of Anakin Skywalker, “this is where the fun begins.”
Here’s my first mock 2021 NFL Draft for the first round.
Pick 1: Jacksonville Jaguars – QB Trevor Lawrence – Clemson
He is simply the best and the Jaguars are quite simply the worst.
Listen, Minshew is not the answer. No one claimed he was, anyway. The Jaguars have completed the season almost perfectly to ensure they have a legitimate chance on the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck.
Lawrence is the real deal. If it ends in bust, everyone will have to eat crow on this one. He will end up being the biggest draft misfire of all time. Period. The end.
Lawrence is a 6’6,230-pound statue of a QB with wheels strong enough to get to the first downline when scrambling between tackles on a busted game. He can pop out of the pocket and anchor his feet in position to launch a rocket over his shoulder to any part of the field if needed. While not quite Russell Wilson yet, he is also a top improviser and can perform most throws on the go, specializing in touch darts.
The only problem he has is that he has to learn to move more naturally in his progressions. He sometimes looks at the receivers and does not get the correct reading quickly enough. However, a little higher level coaching will do him a lot of good in this department. He’s the most physically gifted quarterback to make the NFL Draft in perhaps a decade.
It’s a more mobile Peyton Manning. If that doesn’t scare you, then I don’t know what will.
Pick 2: New York Jets – QB Justin Fields – Ohio State
The granularity required to get the job done.
Justin Fields has a heart. He showed it in the college football playoff semi-final against Clemson. He’s a contender, and he’s the kind of guy you want in the quarterback.
Field draft stock fluctuated throughout the year, but not significantly. He entered and left the 2020 college football season as the second-best quarterback in the draft class.
At 6’3 and around 225 pounds, Fields has a solid height for an NFL quarterback. He’s had what some consider a disappointing final season at Ohio State, but he has the tools to become a franchise quarterback. The Jets seem to want it.
If I were the Jets I would be looking to trade for a transport and build around Sam Darnold, but fans and some pundits think he needs a change of scenery. With a new head coach hire looming, the Jets are instead targeting a quarterback who can scramble over designed running games, as well as decimate men’s cover blitzes on third downs when given the chance. . Oh, and his arm is spectacular, even though he sometimes seems to trust him too much. He needs to learn to be more thorough with his readings instead of sometimes panicking and picking up sacks, which could hamper his effectiveness as an NFL passer early in his career if he doesn’t change games.
Fields isn’t the one the Jets really wanted all season, but he’s someone they should be thrilled to have.
