Finally, a little more love for Miguel Amaya!
MLB.com’s MLB Pipeline team has revealed its new list of Top 100 Prospects Before 2021, and the Chicago Cubs have landed a trio of prospects: Brailyn Marquez at 60, Brennen Davis at 61, and Miguel Amaya at 89 . away had the first two, obviously, but had Amaya just outside.
Here’s Pipeline’s updated scout report on Amaya, which is interesting for the love he has on the defensive side:
He spent 2020 at the alternative training site in Chicago, improving his appeal and communication under the tutelage of veteran supports Jose Lobaton and PJ Higgins.
Amaya stands out the most for her work behind the plate. He showed more consistency as a receiver last summer while continuing to frame well and block shots. His arm was rated as average when he turned pro and now has a solid-to-plus rating, and he cleared 35% of basestealers in 2019.
Although Amaya only hit 0.243 / 0.334 / 0.375 in his first four professional seasons, he was younger than most of his competition and showed his ability to manage the strike zone and put himself on the based. He has a good feel to the barrel and uses all terrain well, although most of the right-handed hitter’s pops come from his pull side.
It’s that last part that I continue to talk to Amaya about, and why I think he continues to be underrated. You talk about a receiver who was young for his level at every turn, who is already showing promise on the defense, and yet posted numbers above the league average at High-A with good power, good discipline. plaque and contact rates. This combination of youth, position and that type productivity is scarce. I can’t wait to see what he does in AA this year, and I hope the offseason development year has done him well.
As for Davis and Marquez, that’s pretty much where they end up on most lists, which is pretty much where they were in the middle of last year as well. You will have this when there is no season. Its good. The year to come, we’ll really see what they can – and the rest of the system – do.
